The Jacksonville City Chess Championships

By Daren Dillinger

Andrew Cunanan again

wins City Chess Championship

.

Andrew Conanan again repeated as City Champion.    He is now approaching the all time record of seven championship titles won by NM David Tew. Roberson as a high school student won the City Scholastic Championship multiple times.  His 2nd place showing in this event was very respectable.  Past City Champ Dave Lamb came in 3rd.

The Florida Times-Union gave good coverage of the event in their January 6th, 2008 Sunday edition.  Coverage was prominently featured on the front page of the Metro ( B ) section with a couple of pictures. The entire article along with pictures was also posted online at: www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/010608/met_231920317.shtml   The 2007 Jacksonville City Championships took place Jan. 5th, 2008 at the Piccadilly Restaurant at the corner of Ramona Blvd. and Lane Avenue proved to be a great site for the event.  Off by ourselves, all was quiet and the tables and other site facilities were very nice. . . And having good food not far away, was an added plus!

Three time past City Champ

Dave Lamb comes in 3rd

Battle for first place between Eric Robson, left and Andrew Cunanan.  When going to Stanton high school, Eric won the city scholastic championship for at least three times I am sure, maybe even four!  Andrew has gone on to accumulate the most City Championship titles of anyone else, except for NM David Tew's seven titles.  Indeed, Andrew may overtake that in years to come!

As I look over the fine games Andrew Cunanan played to win the event, I thought that our JCC Web master Richard Fischer gave him the toughest game.  Notes by D. Dillinger with a strong assist from Chessmaster 9000.

  TWO  FISCHERS

       Bobby & Richard

White: Andrew Cunanan  rating 2174 -- Black: Richard Fischer  rating 1700

1.Nf3 d 5 2.b3 Nf6 3.Bb2 e6 4.e3 c5 5.Ne5 a6 6.Be2 Bd6 7.f4 Nbd7 8.0-0  0-0 9.d3 Qc7 10.Nxd7 Nxd7 11.Nd2 e5 12.f5 Nf6 13.e4!? ( Kh1 is perhaps a bit better to keep a lid on Black pressing in) ... dxe4?! ( Also to be considered for Black would have been 13... c4!  14.dxc4  dxe4 and Black is holding his own) 14.dxe4 b5 15.g4 Bb7 16.Bf3 c4 17.g5?  Bc5+? (Black could have gotten in 17... c3! with a winning attack, for not working for White would be if 18.gxf6  cxb2!  19.fxg7  Rfd8!  will put Black a piece up ) 18.Kg2 Rad8 19.Re1? (White was worried if he played 19.gxf6 Be3 with Black having at least an even game ) 19... Ne8? ( Black still had better in 19,... c3!!  20.Bxc3 -what else? - Ba3! 21.gxf6  Qxf3 & Black will materially go a couple of  points up ) 20.Qe2 Be7 21.f6! (White is trying to stifle Black's strong initiative ) ... gxf6 22.bxc4 fxg5 23.Rad1 Ng7 24.cxb5 axb5 ( also to be considered here would be 24,,, Qxc2! which seems to better maintain Black's advantage ) 25.Qxb5 Qxc2 26.Qxe5 Rxd2+?! ( Black can mix it up more to his favor with 26... f6!)  27.Rxd2 Qxd2+ 28.Re2 f6 29.Qxe7 Rf7? ( After a high level of tit for tat, Black succumbs to the pressure of playing a master level player.  Black's best try to hold the game would have been  29 ... Qf4! 30.Qxb7  g4! with  White going into an endgame a full pawn ahead.  And more importantly White's extra pawn is a passed pawn on the extreme opposite side of the board.  Also White having a Bishop to Black's Knight, is a tipping advantage in these type of positions with pawns of both extreme sides of the board ) 30.Qxf7+! (nailing the winning line) ... Kxf7 31.Rxd2 Bc8 32.Be2 Be6 33.a4 f5 34.Bxg7 Kxg7 35.exf5 Bxf5 36.a5 g4 37.a6 Black resigns  1-0

Position after 37. a6  Black resigns

White: Robin Quillin - Black: Dennis Turner

1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 g6 3.Nf3 Bg7 4.Bc4 0-0 5.d3 c5 6.0-0 Nc6 7.Be3 Ng4 8.Qd2 Nce5 9.Bxc5? Qc7! 10.Bxe7?  Nxf3+!  11.gxf3  Qxh2 mate  0-1

I watched some other games in the event, played by Robin.  He learns quickly as he absorbs the lessons of both wins and losses.
